We’ve stayed at a few hostels in Mexico over the years, and in our experience it’s really hit and miss. From the city of Guadalajara to overlooking the Playas de Tijuana we’ve had some good and bad experiences hosteling it in Mexico.
Overall the experience has been amazing though. Cleanliness has always been the challenge for those of us who are born and raised in the 1st World. But for those of us who have lived in Mexico for a time your standard level of acceptance tends to move around a bit. Personally, I could stay at a 10 Dollar a night hostel in Guadalajara or a $250 dollar a night suite in Mazatlan both offer a unique travel experience that I’d enjoy, and cherish. Both bringing with them a magical tale, and an experience to cherish.
The key thing is to determine what is important to you, is cleanliness important ? If it is than stay at a nice resort hotel, or even a higher priced name brand hotel, but if you are seeking out affordable adventures, community, and meeting some amazing people than I’d recommend staying at a hostel just about anywhere in Mexico.
