During your trip, you might find yourself planning to retire in this very country when the right time comes. This is actually nothing new. Many people are considering Mexico as a retirement destination.

Here’s a great book I have read on buying property in Mexico. It’s called Margarita Mind. A definitive life saver for first time buyers.

However, before you think of retiring you might want to think about buying a house in Mexico first. Of course, there is no better way to retire than live in a retirement home you bought just for that particular purpose.

First off, before you go buy the first house that you see that is on sale, you need to make sure that the one selling the house legally owns it. To determine this ask for the property title or public deed (escritura publica). Aside from the title, the seller should present a copy of the lien certificate or certificado de libertad de gravamen along with the description of the property. The one selling the house should be in the legal position to do so.

Second, for legal purposes it is best that you hire a lawyer when it comes to buying a house in Mexico. A lawyer can help you in dealing with all the legal aspects involved in purchasing a property in Mexico. He or she will help safeguard your interest. Moreover, he or she can review the terms and conditions of the contract.

Third, it is now time to make an offer. You and seller will need to talk with each other and compromise. You should reach a decision that will benefit both you and the seller.

Fourth, once the seller accepts your offer it is time for the payout. To be safe the money should go through the public notary or closing agent. Never hand the money directly to the seller. However, the ideal time to do the payout is after the contract signing. This will make everything binding thus reducing the risk for hoaxes and fake deals.

With everything in place, it is time for you to register your property to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. If you do not have any idea how to go about this process, you can always consult your lawyer.

It is important that you do things according to the law. In this way, you get to own the property legally. With a property in Mexico, you can now look forward to retirement.
